Mr.. Shin and I trekked Machasan last June. It took us 1.5 hrs to reach the peak and another hour to descend. I did not realize that there was a fierce battle that was held here between the UN coalition and the North Korean COmmunist Army during the Korean War.

These works of art combine pottery making, painting and metal inserts. What tedious and detailed job but when done well, what a result! We were told the closonne in France did not have these metal inserts. It was in China where this was done to please the desires of an emperor.

I thought there was just one color of jade. Wow, it was awesome to see all these beautiful colors shaped into jewelries and animals. There were pinks and yellows and greys and whites. Even green came in different shades. True jade we were told had that high sound when hit by another object. We were warned that some of the look-alike were made of plastic. If given as a gift, it brings luck to the recipient. That was the great selling point. I got my jade pendant shaped into my Chinese zodiac animal, rat. I now will have more luck in my life!!

I always dreamt of climbing the great wall of China and never thought that I could get to it. But dreams come true sometimes and as I climbed this wonderful man-made wonder, I marveled at the ingenious and determined Chinese who built them. It took all my strength to accomplish this fete of climbing. The US Soldiers who were in the same trip with us climbed the high wall with ease and ran down those stairs afterwards, just like that. I used to run like them when I was their age and in a way, it surprised me that I could not do it as easily at 60. But I felt such exhiliration when I reached the top. When it was time to go down, I focused on the uneven steps so as not to fall. Now, I can wear my T-shirt that says "I climbed the Great Wall of China" with pride.

Pets are important to many people worldwide and we saw this in Beijing as we walked around the city. We were very interested in these pets because they looked like relatives of Victoria, our lovely Kelly's pet who died recently. Kelly is our son's fiancee. Kelly loved Victoria and she still mourns over her as we do. Thought those of you who are pet lovers will appreciate.

Somewhere in this pile is an 1872 US silver dollar, a couple of jade pendants and other treasures but you have to have a pair of sharp eyes and a talent for bargaining.

I woke up very early as usual and decided to walk around the streets close to our hotel, Best Western of Beijing. It was a weekend and although the city was slowly awakening, it was that time when early risers got their coffee, pick up their papers or like me, go to a flea market which I discovered around the corner. It was fun to see Beijing residents socializing in the flea market. Bargaining seemed to be part of the business way of life and I could see while I bargained with the vendors that they enjoyed the process. I did too. Like them I am a product of an expert bargainer - my mom who also owned several businesses when I was growing up in Baguio. This flea market had many old jades. It was fun to bargain communicating only with finger signs and a calculator.

Beijing International Airport & Tian Namen Square
The Airport was recently built - modern, large and clean. Its simple design of glass and steel made the interior bright and expansive. As soon as we picked up our bags, the tour guide was introduced to the group and off we went to our first sight - Tia Namen Square. It was a smoggy day and the pollution level was high. The smog was like a thin curtain between us and the sights, just like viewing a blurred photo. The square was quite large. We stood in the center and turned around to view the buildings surrounding the square. There was no time to walk around. We had to get to the restaurant on time for lunch!

Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon sponsored by the Army Community Service held at the US Army Garrison Casey, Warrior's Club, South Korea on 28 April 2008, 1100-1300 hours.

In an area where jobs are scarce for spouses and Family members who follow their Soldier or get married to a Soldier, volunteer work is the next best thing. It provides the opportunity to serve and be an integral part of the community. The theme for 2008 was "Volunteerism - Planting Seeds of Kindness."

The Korean Fan Dance showed off the precision and grace of the dancers, the colorful beauty of the Korean costumes and fans and the refinement of the culture. It was a magnificent performance, something all foreigners should experience while in S. Korea.

Wedding ceremony was one of the most important ceremonies in the old days when man and woman were united to form a family. This traditional wedding was based on "Manual for 4 Ceremonial Occasions" compiled by Doam Leejae from the late Joseon dynasty. The four ceremonial occasions were pre-wedding custom, wedding ceremony, celebrating performance and wedding parade.

An active US Army couple were asked to play the role of "bride & groom" in this Korean Traditional Wedding. It was held at Camp Casey, US military post in Tongduchon, S. Korea.

Korean traditional music is so unlike western types of music. The stringed instruments sound high pitched and shril balanced by the sounds of the drums. It is rythmic and unique.

The USAG Red Cloud Army Community Service showcased the importance of a healthy marriage as a deterent to child abuse. A traditional Korean Wedding was the central point of the month long activities on the Prevention of Child Abuse. The Korean Heritage Foundation brough its props, actors and musicians with the goal to familiarize Americans on Korean culture and tradition and to strengthen Korean and American friendship.

The entire wedding demonstration took 1 1/2 hours including the entertainment. The pictures below show the beautiful handmade work of the Korean artisan. Note the intricate embroideries of the panels, the beautifully made ceremonial shoes, transluscent ceramics and well made small tables. Even the hair ornaments of the ladies and their costumes are examples of Korean handiwork.
